Insulin sensitivity & IGF-1

Insulin and IGF-1 are the body's primary signals for the growth phase, tissue building, repair, and immune cell proliferation, and when they stay chronically elevated, as they do with excess body fat, the body never fully shifts into the cleanup phase where damaged components get cleared out. Restoring insulin sensitivity is what allows a clean, complete switch between building and repairing, which is the actual target, not simply lowering insulin at all costs.

Mitochondrial function & NAD+

Healthy mitochondria produce ATP efficiently and maintain a high NAD+ to NADH ratio, which directly activates SIRT1 and the broader sirtuin pathway responsible for cellular repair. NAD+ levels decline nearly linearly with age, which is part of why mitochondrial support, through precursors like NMN or NR alongside the underlying nutrient cofactors, is one of the more direct levers available for restoring a youthful growth-and-repair cycle.

Oxidative stress

An imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants damages proteins, lipids, and DNA directly, and also degrades mitochondrial function and insulin sensitivity, compounding the problem. Rather than lowering oxidative stress by simply restricting calories and running the body on fumes, we target it directly with antioxidant support like glycine, NAC, vitamin E, and ergothioneine, which have each independently extended lifespan without requiring restriction.

Inflammation

Inflammation acts as a growth signal at the genetic level through the JAK-STAT pathway, and it generates its own reactive oxygen species, creating a feedback loop with oxidative stress that compounds over time. It also disrupts mitochondrial function directly. Addressing the dietary and environmental drivers of inflammation, rather than accepting it as an inevitable part of aging, is central to breaking that cycle.

AMPK & sirtuins

These are the classic activators of autophagy, the cell's cleanup process, and they also reduce inflammation and increase both mitochondrial enzyme activity and antioxidant capacity. They can be activated without pharmaceuticals or extreme restriction: vinegar directly activates AMPK, and NAD+ availability, itself a marker of good mitochondrial function, drives the sirtuin pathway. We build toward activating these systems as a byproduct of genuine metabolic health.

mTOR & autophagy balance

mTOR drives growth, proliferation, and protein synthesis, and chronic overactivation is linked to cellular senescence and insulin resistance, but mTOR is also essential for building muscle and regenerating tissue, especially in the gut. The goal isn't to suppress it permanently, since autophagy and growth need to alternate, not flatten into one constant state. We work to help your body access both phases fully, not get stuck in either one.

Thyroid & metabolic rate

Thyroid hormone output naturally declines with age, and standard testing that only checks TSH misses the more telling markers: free T3, which frequently drops, and reverse T3, which frequently rises as thyroid hormone gets shunted into an inactive form. Restoring healthy thyroid function and metabolic rate, rather than suppressing it, is associated with better body temperature regulation, insulin sensitivity, and lower oxidative stress, not more.

Iron & copper-zinc balance

Excess iron accumulates in tissue over time and drives inflammation and oxidative damage, and iron depletion has been shown to meaningfully lower the risk of death from heart disease, yet most people assume they need more iron rather than less. A full panel, ferritin, serum iron, TIBC, and transferrin saturation, not just a single number, is what actually tells us which direction to go. The copper-to-zinc ratio matters the same way, since zinc naturally declines with age while copper accumulates, and that shifting ratio itself predicts mortality.

Vitamin D status

Vitamin D production from sun exposure declines with age, independent of how much sun you actually get, and it functions as a genetic regulator controlling inflammation, immune function, metabolism, and telomere protection all at once. Correcting a deficiency here is rarely just about the vitamin D level itself, since low magnesium status can impair the conversion process, so we look at the full picture rather than treating it as an isolated supplement fix.

"A lower body temperature and slower metabolism is a sign you're aging more slowly."

The truth

Temperature and metabolic rate naturally decline with age. Deliberately lowering them mimics a hallmark of aging itself rather than reversing it, and raising metabolic rate and temperature has independently been shown to extend lifespan and prevent fat gain and insulin resistance.

"Calorie restriction is the gold standard for a longer life."

The truth

Calorie restriction does have real benefits that go beyond just losing weight or avoiding fat gain. But the pathways it works through, lower insulin and IGF-1, activated AMPK and sirtuins, increased autophagy, aren't unique to restriction itself. They can be activated through other means, without the downsides that come with chronically eating too little, like suppressed thyroid function and elevated cortisol.

The truth

It lowers oxidative stress by putting less energy through the system in the first place, not by fixing the underlying mitochondrial dysfunction that generates free radicals. Thyroid hormone, by contrast, has been shown to raise metabolism and reduce oxidative stress at the same time. There's also far more to optimizing the antioxidant system than simply reducing flux through the mitochondria: direct antioxidant support, like glycine, NAC, vitamin E, and ergothioneine, builds your actual capacity to neutralize free radicals, rather than just producing fewer of them.

"If it's not working, restrict harder and exercise more."

The truth

Most calorie-restriction research cuts intake by 20 to 40%, a level almost nobody sustains long-term, including the people prescribing it. Combined with heavy exercise, this kind of prolonged deficit produces a well-documented low-energy-availability state that impairs sleep, immunity, and hormone status.

The truth
